Jon Connell Manager

What has been your career path so far?

It would be dishonest to say a career in accountancy was at the front of my mind when I left university. After graduating I worked in event management for over three years, first in London and then for a two year stay first in Dubai, followed by Bahrain.

Perhaps through a combination of not truly enjoying my work and homesickness I returned to the UK, only to quickly move abroad again. I spent seven months volunteering in the national parks in South Africa. It was here I realised how important it was to enjoy your work and realised I wanted to feel like I was contributing to something meaningful.

What attracted you to Sayer Vincent?

After seeing the advert for trainee accountants at Sayer Vincent I was immediately drawn to the values of the firm and their expertise and passion for the charity sector. I love how we go beyond just ticking boxes with our audits and really engage with our clients to help them – and by extension the wider sector – develop and improve.

What do you enjoy about your job?

I have been so fortunate to work with some fantastic charities on their statutory audits – but also on other engagements including grant funding audits, internal audit, and due diligence. My role has also allowed me to continue to travel, working with clients in Zimbabwe and The Gambia, with more exotic travel to hopefully come in the future!

What do you get up to outside of work?

I enjoy restaurants, gigs and (though frequently painful) watching Aston Villa try to play football.
